When the leaders go personal…

Sunday, February 10, was something different in politics of Andhra Pradesh. The ruling Telugu Desam Party including chief minister Chandrbabau Naidu and his ministerial colleagues were in black shirts holding protest against the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. There were some Congress and the Left parties leaders too holding the protests with empty pots and black flags. Some black balloons were also left in the air as a mark of protest.

Narendra Modi in his speech in Guntur made some interesting personal remarks against Chandrababu Naidu and his son. He referred Naidu as Lokesh’s father. Stating that Chandrababu Naidu had promised to develop the State as Sun Rise State, the Prime Minister said that he could see Naidu’s Son Rise in politics. He addressed Naidu as Lokesh’s father several times in his speech and said that both the father and the son were minting money from the State exchequer.

The TDP too had replied to these personal references. Chandrababu Naidu tweeted saying that he was admitting Lokesh as his son and dared Narendra Modi to admit his wife and mother. “I am with my family taking care of my wife, son and other members. Where is your family? Where is your mother? Where is your wife?” Chandrababu Naidu asked Narendra Modi taking the fight to personal level.

While Narendra Modi said that the TDP chief was spending sleepless nights because of the corruption and fear of losing the impending elections, Chandrababu Naidu replied saying that the fear and sleepless nights are for Modi because of the success of the Opposition meet in Kolkata and the indications of losing the elections. The TDP chief said that the increasing unity among the Opposition parties and the adverse election results in some northern States was giving sleepless nights to Narendra Modi and asserted that Modi would have to go back to his Gujarath leaving Delhi.

The fight between the two leaders was so personal that both ignored the protocol during the Prime Minister’s visit. There was no protocol observed by the State government to receive, accompany and send off the Prime Minister. It was only Governor ESL Narasimhan who accompanied the Prime Minister in the official tour. The DGP and chief secretary have limited their protocol to receive the Prime Minister at Gannavaram airport.

The Prime Minister too ignored the protocol of sending invitation to the Chief Minister to join the official programmes at Guntur before going for the party’s public meeting. The two leaders have thus ignored each other taking the fight too personal even by keeping the protocol aside.
