Former minister Daggubati Venkateswara Rao is at cross roads now. Having lost the 2019 Assembly elections on YSR Congress ticket at Parchuru in Prakasam district, Venkateswara Rao is maintaining low profile. However, his wife and former union minister Puradheswari is active in the Bharatiya Janata Party in the State.
The ruling YSR Congress is finding it tough to have Venkateswara Rao in the party and his wife in the Opposition. While it is not clear whether Rao wanted to make his move first on his own or the YSR Congress leaders wanted him to do so, the talk is that he is having second thoughts on continuing in the party.
Sources say that Venkateswara Rao is likely to shift to the BJP and back his wife Purandheswari for the next election. Though he wanted to stay with the YSR Congress, the situation is not so congenial for him in the district politics. After the government’s formation, two of his rivals in the district politics were given highest priority, ignoring him.
While Balineni Srinivasa Reddy is made a Minister in the cabinet, former MP Y V Subba Reddy was appointed as chairman of the Tirmula Tirupati Devastanams (TTD). The two leaders are wielding power in the district politics, while he is reduced to be a mere spectator. He is not able to digest this situation. Though lost the Assembly election, Venkateswara Rao expected some key position, at least an advisor in some sector, from the chief minister. As nothing of the sort happened in the last four years, Rao is having second thoughts on his continuation, the source said.
Meanwhile, Purandheswari is making her moves fast in the State BJP leadership, targeting the government as directed by the party top leadership. The BJP leadership wants to emerge as the strong opposition in the State and thus have some electoral prospects in the 2024 general elections. If this has to happen, the BJP leaders in the State have to target the government and expose its failures.
With wife criticising the ruling party, Venkateswara Rao is not finding himself comfortable and hence the decision. It is to be seen what move that Venkateswara Rao makes in the days to come.
