Amid the preparations for the G20 Summit in Delhi, a video of a group marching on the streets went viral on the internet.
Netizens shared the video with communal angle claiming Muslims living in Delhi protested the imposition of Section 144, which prohibits the assembly of four or more people in an area.
FACT CHECK:
We performed a keyword search and found a post by the Delhi police on X (formerly Twitter) shared on September 7 that clarified the procession was taken out with due permission before the G20 Summit. It also clarified that it was not a communal protest but a traditional practice of the community called Chehlum.
The Chehlum procession took place on September 6 and 7. Certain roads and stretches were regulated and some bus services were terminated in the national capital in view of the procession. (Read more here)
The Delhi police issued a traffic advisory as well. It also mentioned that this was a religious and public meeting.
The Chehlum procession of the Shia Muslim community took place in Delhi, predating the G20 Summit and has no connection with any protest for imposition of Section 144.
