With the heat of the World Cup catching up in the whole country, a critical statement supposedly made by Indian veteran cricketer Sunil Gavaskar is in wide circulation on social media. In his alleged statement, he criticizes BCCI for letting India down. And, also says that this is the worst World Cup with empty stadiums and no scoreboards.
The claim goes as “Sunil Gavaskar on Star Sports: "I am ashamed to call myself Indian. This is the worst Cricket World Cup. Empty stadiums, no scoreboard, pathetic management from BCCI." Gavaskar didn't hold back.
Fact Check:
The claim is False. Sunil Gavaskar did not make any such statement. It is fabricated.
We performed a keyword search, but could not find any such statement made by Sunil Gavaskar on BCCI. When we searched Star SportsTwitter handle, we did not find any post about Sunil Gavaskar’s critical statement published anywhere.
The recent video featuring Sunil Gavaskar was published by Star Sports on September 28, 2023.
Another fake statement was attributed to him in September 2023.
The statement was “It should be a matter of utter shame for us as Indians for politicizing, ruining, and basically hijacking this beautiful game of cricket. BCCI has let India down and tonight’s results are a testimony of it”, after which Rohan Gavaskar issued a statement on his X(Twitter) handle.
NDTV also issued a clarification that the statement is fabricated.
Hence, Sunil Gavaskar did not issue any critical statement about BCCI recently to either Star Sports or NDTV. The claim is false and the statement is a fabricated one.
