Fact Check: Old video shows Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations were held in Uganda in East Africa, NOT South Africa
The video is being shared with the caption “Auspicious Celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi in South Africa!!”
A video showing African people playing music on drums, while Indians are dancing to the beats and singing 'Ganapati Bappa Moriya' is widely in circulation on the social media. The video is being shared with the caption "Auspicious Celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi in South Africa!!"
Fact Check:
The claim that the celebrations are from South Africa is MISLEADING. The video is an old one and is from Uganda in East Africa.
When we searched the keyframes extracted from the video using Google reverse image search, we found a YouTube video published by a channel named Helping Humanity. The video was published in September 2017.
The video was titled 'This is an African style of celebrating Ganesh Festival… Shree Ganesh Temple, Entebbe, Uganda'.
The video was also shared in the article of Amar Ujala.com, which states " Ganeshotsav has started across the country from Thursday. On the auspicious occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, Ganesha devotees brought the idol of Gajanan to their respective homes. For the next ten days, not only in the country but also abroad, the pomp of Ganeshotsav will be seen. Let us show you a video which is from the city of Entebbe in the African country of Uganda. Indians welcome Ganesh ji in African style at Entebbe's Ganesh temple."
We also found an ANI video that was published on September 13, 2018, stating that actor Anupam Kher shared a magical video of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in Uganda.
Here is the actor's viral tweet from 2017 about the celebrations.
On searching for Ganesh Temple, Entebbe, we found their Facebook page which shared a similar video of Ugandan nationals beating drums and singing 'Ganapathi Bappa Moriya'.
The claim that Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations were held in South Africa was debunked in 2021 too, but yet it is viral once again this year.
