The Election Commission of India had come into the rescue of the Opposition parties in Telangana by stating that the model code of conduct had come into force in the state after the Assembly was dissolved. This would put the ruling Telangana Rastra Samithi to stop making any promises or conducting any government programme in the State till the elections are over.
The TRS being the care taker government is going wide and wild to hit back at the Opposition these days. Minister K T Rama Rao is at his best holding election campaign as a Minister making best use of the government machinery. The police are with the TRS in helping its meetings which was missing for the Congress and other opposition parties.
Now, the ECs fresh orders have checkmated the ruling TRS, which has to now go alone for its campaign. Though the TRS is confident of retaining the power, the Congress is leaving no stone unturned to wrest the power. The Congress is building opposition unity in the State by roping in the Telugu Desam Party and Telangana Jana Samithi of Prof. Kodandaram. Efforts are on to rope in the CPI and the CPM, which have already tied up with the Jana Sena here. The YSR Congress is yet to decide whether to go alone or have tie-up with the TRS in the State. A decision from the YSR Congress is expected once the election schedule is released by the EC.
The Congress is feeling comfortable with the opposition unity besides the re-entry of Konda family from Warangal. Konda Surekha and her husband Konda Murali have left the TRS and joined the Congress in the presence of Rahul Gandhi. The family is strong in Warangal and the firebrand Surekha’s presence would help the Congress in building a positive vote bank for the party.
The Congress is also waiting for the TRS MP D Srinivas to come home, which is likely to happen before the elections. TRS MP and Chief Minister’s daughter K Kavitha is unhappy with Srinivas and had asked her dad to kick this man out of the party before the elections. Srinivas too is not happy with Kavitha, but still want the TRS to act against him instead of making his moves and blamed again.
The Congress banks on the increasing dissidence in the TRS and the party, like the BJP, had opened all its doors for the dissidents to walk in. With the EC putting restrictions now on the TRS to make any announcement or hold any government programme, the Congress predicts more defections to its advantage.
