Kanna-Mudragada to rally Kapus for BJP

The appointment of former minister Kanna Lakshminarayana as Bharatiya Janata Party AP president had come as handy for the dominant Kapu community in the State. The community, which feels that it was betrayed by the Telugu Desam Party in the State, is likely to rally behind the BJP now, under the leadership of Kanna Lakshminarayana.

Interestingly, former minister and Kapu patriarch Mudragada Padmanabham had met Kanna at a time when the announcement of the latter had come. It is said that the two leaders have agreed to work together promising greater benefits to the community. The two leaders enjoy greater support in the community and if they rally together, it would be a great loss to the ruling Telugu Desam Party in the next elections, in terms of votes.

Though the appointment of Kanna was delayed, it is felt that the new chief would breathe life into the party in the State as it could not expand its base in the last four years. The outgoing president Kambhampati Haribabu, a staunch loyalist of M Venkaiah Naidu, was seen as stumbling block for the party’s growth in the State and it was felt that Kanna should be a better candidate. But, the leadership took more than a year to name Kanna and it is seen as too late for the party. The decision too came at a time when Kanna himself wanted to quit the party and join YSR Congress. In fact, he had made all arrangements to join the YSR Congress and his house, till the announcement came, was full of hoardings of YSR Congress.

Whether or not Mudragada is going to help Kanna and whether or not the entire Kapu community is going to rally behind the two leaders, it is said that the BJP in the State had lost its ground already and cannot win even a single seat in the next elections on its own. The damage for the party was so much, particularly in the last five months, that no leader can help the party win the people.

Meanwhile, Kanna’s elevation is seen as a potential threat to the TDP and Chandrababu Naidu in the next election. It was on the Kapu votes in the last elections that Chandrababu Naidu had won and Kanna is likely to carry these votes from the TDP, which would thwart the prospects of the TDP in the next elections.
