Rahul Gandhi to lead Jan Akrosh Rally on April 29

The beleaguered Congress is not leaving any occasion or reason to come back to power. Interestingly, it also appears to be working sincere on getting bifurcation benefits to Andhra Pradesh.

The Congress had held several forms of protest in the last four years for special category status to the State. Starting with the signature campaign, it had moved a private member bill in Rajya Sabha by K V P Ramachandra Rao, which was later rejected on finance grounds. The party had also mobilised 14 other parties across the country in favour of the special category status and other demands for the State. Rahul Gandhi had addressed a meeting in Guntur a few months ago demanding special category status and promising the same.

The All India Congress Committee at its recent plenary too had adopted a resolution promising special category status. This followed no confidence motion by the Congress against the government in Lok Sabha, which was also not admitted by the BJP-led NDA government.

To further step up the pressure, the Congress is now planning to hold Jan Akrosh Rally in Delhi on April 29, which would be led by Rahul Gandhi. Though the Congress has half a dozen issues to be raised in the rally in Delhi the special category status demand finds its place which is set to increase its fortunes in the next round of elections both in the State and at the national level too.

The Congress leaders from Andhra Pradesh are getting ready to join the rally in Delhi. APCC president Raghuveera Reddy is leaving no stone unturned to keep the issue alive. In fact, even before the YSR Congress took up the issue of the special category status, it was the Congress which kept it alive in the State through signature campaign and other forms of protest. Raghuveera Reddy deserves a pat on his back for keeping the issue alive and making it into the national agenda of the Congress.
