Fact Check: MTR does not sell 'halal certified' products in India

A few users commented that Now, MTR is also "HALAL certified", yuck. I'm not gonna purchase 'thook wala' products anymore. MTR can sell upma & their products to Muslims & their qaum. As a Hindu, I'll not buy @MTRFoodsIN

One of the users on Facebook shared the image along with the text in Telugu "*MTR కంపెనీ "హలాల్ సర్టిఫికేషన్‌"లోకి ప్రవేశించింది, అంటే అన్ని MTR ఉత్పత్తుల తయారీ ప్రక్రియలో 25% మంది ఇస్లాం పాటించే ఉద్యోగులను ఆహార పదార్థాలు తయారీ పనికీ అనుమతించబడతారు మరియు వారు అన్ని ఆహార పదార్థాలలో ఉమ్మివేయడాన్ని మతపరమైన "ఆస్థా" ఆచారం/నమ్మకం లేదా "హలాల్‌గా" వారి మంతా చారం.

When translated, the claim reads, "MTR Company has entered into "Halal Certification" which means that 25% of employees involved in the manufacturing of all MTR products are followers of Islam and that they spit in all food items as a religious "faith" practice/belief or "Halal". They believe that spitting in a food before eating it is a blessing from Allah. Now, if Hindus want to eat these MTR food products, even if they contain the spit, urine or any other harmful products deliberately mixed in it by the Jihadis, then it is your karma... there is a risk of any kind of sedition material in it. Recently, a big gang was caught by the police for adding a contraceptive chemical to products consumed only by the Hindus. This message is being spread to be an eye opener to those who consider that products manufactured by Jihadis are alone tasty. Anyway, if you eat the same thing, it's up to you! Beware of the harmful effects"

The image is viral on Facebook with several users sharing it with the same claim and circling the halal-certified logo on the cover.

Fact check:

The claim is FALSE. Halal-certified products are not found in the Indian market.

When we read one of the comments on these viral posts, we found a few comments stating that there is no such halal-certified logo on the products they bought locally.

We searched the online portal of MTR foods selling products in India and abroad. On the portal, we did not find any such halal-certified logo on any of the products sold by them.

Also, products sold on other online portals like Amazon which sell products in India did not have a halal logo.

On online commercial portals which sell products in the USA also, we did not find the halal-certified logo.

However, on one of the international online portals which sell products across countries in Europe, we found the halal certified products by MTR.

According to the about us page of MTR foods, Mavalli Tiffin Rooms was started in Yagnanarayana Maiya, and now sells a wide range of products which are Halal certified, worldwide.

Hence, the image of MTR products sold in European countries shows the halal certification logo but not those sold in the Indian market. The claim is FALSE.
