Fact Check: Video of ‘Rahul Gandhi Go Back’ slogans is not recent and not related to Manipur visit

Update: 2024-07-10 14:30 GMT

On July 8, 2024, Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition, visited Manipur. During his visit, he met people in relief camps who had been displaced by the ethnic violence in the state. He was also seen interacting with local leaders, workers, and volunteers outside the camp. This visit marked his third trip to Manipur and the first since the Lok Sabha elections, in which the Congress party won both Lok Sabha constituencies in the violence-affected state.

A 2-minute and 19-second video has been circulating on social media, showing people chanting "Rahul Gandhi Go Back". Users claimed that this incident occurred during Rahul Gandhi's recent visit to Manipur. However, the video is actually from Assam, recorded during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in 2024.

Fact Check: The claim is false. The video is from January 2024 and shows people raising slogans against Rahul Gandhi in Assam.

During a reverse image search, we found an article published by IBC 24 on January 21, 2024, with the headline “Bharat Jodo Nyay yatra: लोगों ने लगाए ‘राहुल गांधी गो बैक’ के नारे, असम में अब इस जगह हुआ भारत जोड़ो न्याय यात्रा का विरोध,”

When translated to English, it means "People Protest against Rahul Gandhi during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam."

On Jan 22, 2024, O TV News English uploaded the same video on their YouTube channel with the title “With ‘Anyaya Yatra’ Slogans, People Protest Against Rahul Gandhi In Nagaon, Assam”.

When we searched with the keyword “Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam'', we found a detailed article published in Deccan Herlad on Jan 22, 2024,. In the article, DH mentioned: “The incident took place when Gandhi and some other leaders stopped at the restaurant in Ambagan on way to their night halt in Rupohi, about 10 km from the site. The crowd raised slogans against the MP and also displayed placards with messages such as 'Anyay Yatra' and 'Rakibul go back', referring to Samaguri Congress MLA Rakibul Hussain. Gandhi and other leaders were escorted out of the eatery by security personnel. There was another incident of attack on vehicles of party workers returning from the rally, eyewitness said, adding three members of the students' wing were admitted to hospital with serious injuries.

Ratul Kalita, a Congress leader & senior spokesperson of Assam Congress, shared on his social media “@RahulGandhi Ji did not face 'Go Back' slogans in Manipur on July 8.

According to PTI news: “Crowd raises slogans against Rahul Gandhi outside eatery in Assam's Nagaon”

Hence, we found the claim is false. The viral video is not recent and is not linked to Rahul Gandhi's recent visit to Manipur after the Lok Sabha elections. The video was recorded in January 2024 during the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in Assam.
