Fact Check: Viral image claiming to be showing Tom Cruise’s stunt doubles is generated using AI-powered technology

A picture claiming to be showing Hollywood actor Tom Cruise’s stunt doubles is viral on social media. The picture shows three men looking exactly like Tom Cruise.

In addition to that, a few posts also shared a series of images showing more men looking like actor Tom Cruise.

These images are in circulation with the caption “Here is Tom Cruise’s stunt doubles celebrating after the release of ”Mission Impossible 7” Where is the real Tom Cruise in the photo?”

The claim that the images show Hollywood actor Tom Cruise’s stunt doubles is false. These images are created using AI-powered technology ‘Midjourney’.

When searching for news of any such meeting of Tom Cruise’s stunt doubles, the images show that each of them has been based on Tom Cruise’s face with very minute changes. The skin texture also seemed to very smooth, wax-like consistency.

Going through the viral posts, we found some comments stating that actor Tom Cruise never used stunt doubles and these images are generated using AI.

These images were created digitally by a Facebook user known as Ong Hui Woo. He shared the images on a Facebook group called Midjourney Official. Ong Hui Woo wrote “Tom Cruise’s stunt doubles celebrating at the MI 7 premiere after party. *If you intend to copy and paste these photos on your website or on your FB, please at least mention and give credit to the original creator (which is me) or Midjourney, the platform where all these images are created”

When searched further, we also found the Facebook post by Ong Hui Woo stating that the AI images of Tom Cruise he created were for fun and did not expect it to go viral.

This claim was also debunked by fact-check organizations like Snopes.

Therefore, the images created using AI were falsely shared with the claim that the stunt doubles of Tom Cruise are celebrating the movie Mission Impossible 7. The claim is false.
