Fact Check: Statement by ex-RBI Governor Raghuram Rajan criticising Modi is FALSE
Raghuram Rajan did not criticize Modi. The viral text carries inaccurate information as well
A statement allegedly passed by former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Raghuram Rajan on India’s progress even before Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power is viral on social media.
Allegedly, Raghuram Rajan aimed at criticizing Modi while saying India has achieved multiple accomplishments under previous administrations even before Modi came to power. He has also allegedly said that citizens are wrongly crediting all the progress to Modi, when instead India has been progressing greatly for the last 70 years even before the PM came to power.
An excerpt from the viral text reads, *Still others believe or try to believe that everything happened because of Modi in the last four years!!!* *In fact, "Modiji" has taken India back by 40 years in four years.*
FACTCHECK:
There are no credible news reports or social media posts supporting Raghuram Rajan making this statement.
No such statement was posted on Raghuram Rajan's LinkedIn profile, where he often shares his writing. There was no text similar to the message in the claim here either.
Furthermore, certain information provided in the viral message was found to be inaccurate. For example, the message claims that Rajan is the former Chairman of the RBI. However, he is the former Governor of the RBI. The position of chairman does not exist in the institution.
Another example is from an excerpt stating Modi has served only for four years, while in fact he has been in power for over nine years already.
Clearly, Raghuram Rajan did not make the above comments criticizing Modi.
