Fact Check: Video claiming to show passenger plane crash in Nepal is not recent

There were 72 passengers and crew on board the flight. The twin-engine ATR 72 aircraft crashed while attempting to land at a newly opened airport in Pokhara.
Five Indians are reported to have lost their lives in this plane crash, of whom 4 were from Ghazipur district in Uttar Pradesh. A few videos are online claiming to be the live stream videos of one of the passengers in the plane.
A video of a plane crashing on the land and bursting into flames is also in circulation claiming that it shows the Nepal plane crash. Several Twitter users shared this video with the hashtag #NepalPlaneCrash.
Fact check:
The claim that the video shows the Nepal plane crash is FALSE. It shows a Boeing 747-400 American cargo plane that crashed in Afghanistan in 2013.
When we extracted key frames from the video and searched them in Google reverse image search, we found few news reports published in May 2013 showing similar visuals.
According to news reports, a 747-400 cargo plane belonging to the USA crashed at Afghanistan’s Bagram Airfield on April 29, 2013. This incident was recorded on the dash cam of a vehicle passing by. The crash left 7 Americans aboard on the plane dead. One Army spokesperson said the crash occurred due to low altitude after take-off. The plane, run by Florida-based National Airlines, a subsidiary of National Air Cargo, was reportedly carrying vehicles and other cargo and was bound for Dubai.

After the crash, Taliban claimed responsibility but the Associated Press rubbished the claim. The news agency said the cause of the crash was being investigated by emergency crews that rushed to the site, but there was no sign of insurgent activity in the area at the time.

Therefore, the viral video shows visuals of the cargo plane crash that took place in Afghanistan in April 2013 and not the recent passenger plane crash in Nepal that occurred in 2023. The claim is false.
