A dramatic geological incident occurred near the Mohangarh Canal area in Jaisalmer on December 28, 2024 when the underground water and gas burst out suddenly during a tubewell digging operation. An underground reservoir is said to have breached creating a 10 feet high jet of water, resulting in the sinking of the drilling machine and truck in to the ground. Even after24 hours, the flow of water has not stopped, creating a pond like structure.

Meanwhile, several social media users started sharing speculations about resurfacing of the Saraswati River. But some users shared a video showing several houses and streets completely immersed in water with the claim that Jaislamer has turned into an ocean because of this incident. The video is viral on various platforms of social media like YouTube, Instagram, etc. Some videos had the captions like “राजस्थान के जैसलमेर में बन गया समुद्र”, “राजस्थान के जैसलमेर मेंबाढ़ आ गया”.

Fact Check:

The claim is False. The video is not related to Jaisalmer.

When we searched for videos depicting the Jaisalmer incident, we found a report published by Times now Navbharat on December 30, 2024 showing the place and surroundings where the tubewell incident took place, which is completely different from the visuals in the viral video.

The description of the video states that an incident came to light in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan which surprised everyone. In fact, on December 28, around 10 am, a borewell was being dug in a field in the Mohangarh area of Jaisalmer. After digging about 850 feet, suddenly water started coming out with strong pressure. The stream of water coming out of the ground was so strong that it started rising several feet high. Due to the pressure of water, a crater about 20 feet wide has formed at the spot.

According to a report published on Zee News, the incident caused the ground to collapse, unleashing water and gas under immense pressure. The eruption produced a high-pressure jet of water, triggering panic among local residents. Jaisalmer District Collector Pratap Singh Nathawat reported that the leakage stopped around 10 PM on Sunday and urged people to avoid the area for their safety.

According to patrika.com, the flow of water that came out during the digging of a tubewell in a field of Chak 3 Jorawala Minor in 27 BD of the canal area stopped after about 41 hours. Water kept coming out of the ground for two consecutive days. The tubewell digging machine and truck are buried in the ground. The water stopped coming out of the ground around 10 pm on Sunday night. After this, the administration and the farmers heaved a sigh of relief. It is feared that the leakage may start again, due to which it is necessary to be cautious. If the leakage starts again from the same place, then poisonous gas etc. may leak. There is also a possibility of land subsidence and explosion.

Sub-tahsildar and Executive Magistrate Mohangarh Lalit Charan said that the district collector and district Magistrate of Jaisalmer had imposed Section 163 of the Indian Civil Defence Code in the area, which would remain in force for now. People have been appealed not to allow anyone or cattle to enter the area of the tubewell meter. The farmer of the field has also been prohibited from trying to take out the equipment stuck in this tubewell until the opinion of experts is received.

When we extracted keyframes from the viral video and searched using Google reverse image search, we found an Instagram post published in October 2024.

An Instagram handle named Florida and floridaman shared the viral video with the caption ‘Hurricane Milton - Fort Myers Beach, halfway down Estero Island, October 9, 5:30 pm. (Credit @stevenmichaelcalabrese )’.

When we searched for the Instagram handle @stevenmichaelcalabrese , we found the same viral video shared with the caption ‘Fort Myers Beach, halfway down Estero island @ 5:30 pm on Oct 9. Milton was about double the flooding from Helene for FMB.’

According to news reports, hurricane Milton crashed into Florida in October 2024, causing a devastating effect. Therefore, the viral video does not show flooding in Jaisalmer after a tubewell burst in Decemebr 2024. The claim is False.
