Married men seem to be the most vulnerable category and are prone to ending their lives due to marital problems. According to NCRB data, among married people, more men died by suicide as compared to women. In the year 2022, 83,713 married men died by suicide as compared to 30,771 women during the same period. The recent cases of techies from Bengaluru, and Agra have shaken the country and sparked a wide debate around India’s tough dowry laws which are designed to protect women from harassment and even murder.

Atul Subhash, a techie from Bengaluru, killed himself in December 2024. He left a detailed 24-page suicide note and 81-minute video on the trouble in his marriage and divorce proceedings. Similar to this case, a 30-year-old man working as a manager in TCS also ended his lie after recording a 6-minute video, pleading for awareness of men’s struggles and expressing loneliness. Another incident of a woman killing her husband along with her lover is also reported in the media. After these incidents, activism for men’s struggles has risen, and on social media platforms, people have started sharing different videos to make a statement about the problems faced by men.

A video showing a woman spending time in a hotel room, being caught by her husband is shared with captions like “This married woman came to a hotel room with her BF Look at her shamelessness when her husband catches her!” The video is in circulation, implying that the woman in the video represents women in today’s society.

“ये हैं आज के समाज की बदतमीज़ और बेहया औरतें!! बताइये….ये औरत शादीशुदा है होटल में दूसरे मर्द के साथ पकड़ी गई है फिर भी पति से बोल रही है कि "मैं तुझे क्यों बताऊं। सवाल यह कि शादी को मजाक बना रखा है! फिर ये गुजारा भत्ता मांगेगी या पति को मारवा देगी!” When translated, it claims that “These are the rude and shameless women of today's society!! Tell me….this woman is married and has been caught with another man in a hotel and yet she is telling her husband, “Why should I tell you? The question is that marriage has been made a joke! Then will she ask for alimony or get her husband killed!”
