Authorities tightly monitor registered and unregistered religious groups. Human rights groups believe that the Chinese government is committing crimes against the Uyghur population. They are said to have detained them in camps and sentenced thousands of people to prisons.

Meanwhile, a disturbing video of a man sitting on his knees being beaten up brutally by another man is in circulation. The man can be seen continuously kicking the victim in his face. The video is in circulation with the claim that the video is from China and when a man started offering religious prayers in a restaurant, he was beaten up by the local man.

Some captions also claim that the victim is a Pakistani and was offering namaz in a restaurant, and the person beating up the victim is the restaurant owner. The caption goes “A Pakistani in China was offering Namaz in a restaurant considering it to be his father's house. Suddenly the restaurant owner came from behind and....this is what happens in China when someone doesn't differentiate between prayer & public place.” Here are the links to the X posts (Graphic Video Warning)


Fact Check:

The claim is False. The viral video is an old one from Thailand.

When we performed a reverse image search on the extracted keyframes from the video, we found that this video is an old one from the year 2020.

We found an article published on a Thai website named amarintv.com, in December 2020. The report shares the screenshots from the video. It states that a senior employee of a debt-collecting company abused his subordinate and brutally assaulted him to teach him a lesson.

We also found a YouTube video published by a channel named This Morning’s Story, with the title ‘หนุ่มเปิดปากร่วมแก๊งทวงหนี้โหด ถูกกระทืบนอนซม 3 วัน หลังทวงเงินลูกค้าไม่ได้’, which translates to ‘A young man opens up about joining a brutal debt collection gang. He was bedridden for 3 days after being unable to collect money from a customer.’ The description of the video states that the video shows a debt collection company’s employee brutally beating up another employee because he could not collect his money in Samut Sakhon, Thailand. When the Samut Sakhon city police station questioned the victim, he stated that the assaulter was the head of an informal loan shark company. The victim did not report the incident to the police.

Therefore, the claim that the viral video shows a Pakistani national offering namaz in a restaurant was beaten up by the restaurant owner is False. The video is an old one, showing an employee of a loan company beaten up by his senior employee.
