A video of a body builder taking his prize on stage and then kicking it off himself is being shared virally implying that it happened in India and that he was insulted in the name of his caste.

The video shows the contestant being awarded with a medal and a box with mixer in it, then he argues with one of the organizers and he is told to stand behind. Out of rage, he kicks off the mixer box, then walks out. This video is in circulation with a claim in Telugu:

“టాలెంట్ ఎంత ఉన్నా కులాన్ని బట్టే గుర్తింపు ఉంటుంది డిజిటల్ ఇండియా లో అతని ప్రతిభని గుర్తించండి రా తక్కువా కులం వాడు ఆన్ని అవమానించకండి తక్కువ కులం వాడైతే ఏందిరా మనిషి కాదా అతను”

When translated, it claims that ‘in Digital India, no matter how much talented a person is, recognition depends on the caste. Come on, even if he is a man belonging to a backward community, don’t insult him. After all, he is a human being’

Fact check:

The claim that the body builder was insulted in the name of his caste in India is FALSE. The incident occurred in Bangladesh and not in India.

When the key frames extracted from the video were searched using Google reverse image search, we found that the video is from Bangladesh and the body builder’s name is Jahid Hasan Shuvo.

According to essentiallysports.com, Jahid Hasan Shuvo, who was the runner-up in the competition, kicked his prize during the presentation. Shuvo received a blender as his reward which did not make him happy. Disappointed, he started kicking the box and condemned Bangladesh Bodybuilding Federation.

Jahid Hasan Shuvo, the 28-year-old bodybuilder, participated in the 2022 BBF National Bodybuilding Championship. He competed in the men’s physique 170 cm plus category and managed to win a silver medal. Evidently, he was not satisfied with the results as he said, “Even a child could tell the difference in physique between me and the winner.”

The viral video was also shared in this report.

According to reports, Shuvo explains that his anger is not with receiving the blender, but with what he feels is corruption within the Federation. "This was a kick at corruption. Any kind of corruption in any place in our country," he said to the media. The Bodybuilding Federation, however, has imposed lifetime ban on Shuvo from their competitions in response.

BBF has cited ‘unsportsmanlike behaviour’ and ‘breach of discipline’ for the decision. While speaking about the matter to Dhaka Tribune, former Bangladeshi bodybuilder Haji Peyar Mohammad (one of the judges at the event) expressed shock and disbelief at the actions of Jahid.

Hence, the viral video of the body builder kicking his prize is not from India and the cause of his aggression is not the caste system in the country. The incident occurred in Bangladesh. The claim is FALSE.
